Answer

How much space does an ATM need?

Less than most operators expect. The footprint is small; the things that matter are clearance, power, sightlines and where the queue forms.

Short answer

How much space does an ATM need?

A standard freestanding retail ATM occupies about 60cm x 60cm of floor space and stands roughly 1.4-1.5m high, with a general-purpose power point within a couple of metres. Allow around a metre of clear standing space in front so a customer can use it without blocking a walkway, keep it in staff line of sight and away from accessible paths of travel and emergency exits. Through-the-wall units need a suitable external wall and a serviceable rear cavity instead of floor space, which is why they suit shopfronts and shopping-centre entries.

The practical requirements

What a venue needs to provide

  • About 60cm x 60cm of floor space for a freestanding terminal
  • Roughly a metre of clear standing space in front of the screen
  • A general power point within a couple of metres
  • A fixed line or adequate mobile coverage for the data connection
  • Staff line of sight, and lighting suitable for evening trade
  • Clear of accessible paths of travel and emergency egress

Placement that earns more

Where to put it inside the venue

Visibility drives usage more than convenience does. A machine visible from the entrance or the main service point is used far more than one tucked into a back corridor, even when the walking distance is identical.

Keep the ATM off the direct queue line for the register so two lines never merge, and give it enough space that a customer using it does not feel watched by the people behind them.

In licensed venues, state gaming rules also constrain where a machine may sit relative to the gaming floor. We check that as part of the site assessment rather than leaving it to the venue.

FAQs

Questions people ask

Rarely for a freestanding unit — it needs floor space and power. Through-the-wall installs do require wall works, which are assessed and quoted before anything is committed.
