Direct answer
How much does an ATM earn a business?
Your ATM income is the number of withdrawals each month multiplied by your agreed share of the surcharge. Free placement carries no cost and a moderate share; leasing or owning the machine raises your share, with a monthly fee or upfront cost against it. Most venues also gain a second, larger benefit — cash withdrawn on site tends to be spent on site.
The surcharge is disclosed to the cardholder on screen before they confirm the withdrawal, so there is no cost to your business and no cost to customers who choose not to proceed. The split between operator and venue is set out plainly in your agreement, with reporting so you can reconcile it.
We forecast a realistic monthly range for your specific site rather than quoting a best case. Trading hours, location, customer mix and the nearest competing cash point matter far more than the machine model.
Volume drivers
What lifts withdrawals at your site
Trading hours
Late-night and 24-hour sites capture withdrawals when banks and centres are closed.
Position
Visible from the entrance or counter beats a back corner every time.
Cash gap nearby
Being the only ATM in the street or town lifts volume sharply.
Customer mix
Tradespeople, travellers, gaming patrons and market shoppers use cash more.
Signage
Street-facing and in-store ATM signage attracts non-customers who then buy.
Reliability
Monitored, well-stocked machines build repeat use; empty ones lose it.
Beyond the surcharge
The indirect return most owners underestimate
- Cash withdrawn on site is commonly spent on site
- Higher average basket on shop and bar purchases
- New walk-in traffic from people seeking cash
- Fewer lost sales from card-only or terminal outages
- Lower card fee load on low-value transactions
- A reason for customers to choose your site over the next one
Choose your model
Which model gives the best net return?
Free placement is the highest return on effort: no capital, no admin, no risk, and a share of every withdrawal. It suits most suburban venues and any operator who does not want to handle cash.
Leasing raises your share for a fixed monthly fee and works once volume is proven, which is common for petrol stations, hotels and 24-hour convenience sites.
Buying gives you the full surcharge and the fastest payback at high volume, in exchange for the upfront cost and cash handling.
FAQ
ATM revenue questions
How does ATM revenue share work?
Every cardholder withdrawal carries a surcharge disclosed on screen before the transaction is approved. That surcharge is split between the ATM operator and the venue according to your agreement. On free placement the operator funds the machine and the cash and retains a larger portion; on a lease or purchase your share increases.
How much money can a business make from an ATM?
Monthly income equals withdrawals multiplied by your share of the surcharge. A quiet suburban site may process a hundred or so withdrawals a month, while a 24-hour service station, busy hotel or event venue can process many hundreds. We forecast a realistic range from your traffic before installation rather than quoting a headline figure.
Is ATM income really passive?
On a fully managed free placement, yes — we supply, install, load, monitor and service the machine, so there is no stock to buy, no staff time and no maintenance obligation. Self-loading operators trade a little admin for a larger net return.
What increases ATM withdrawal volume?
Long trading hours, visibility from the entrance or counter, being the only cash point nearby, cash-friendly customers, late-night trade, gaming rooms, markets and events, and clear on-site signage all lift volume.
Do I still benefit if withdrawals are modest?
Usually yes, because the indirect gain matters. Cash withdrawn on site is frequently spent on site, so shop baskets, bar spend and impulse purchases rise even when surcharge income alone is modest.
Are there any costs to the venue on free placement?
No machine cost, no installation cost and no service cost. The venue supplies the floor space, power and a suitable position.
EFTPOS fees
Also paying too much on card payments?
Most venues we install an ATM for are also running an EFTPOS terminal. If you want the card side checked at the same time, we compare EFTPOS machine fees, terminal rental and surcharging options off one recent merchant statement. Compare EFTPOS machine fees or ask about both in the same enquiry.
