Answer

Who fills an ATM with cash?

It depends on who owns the machine. The load, the float and the risk travel together — so the answer decides how much work an ATM is for your venue.

Short answer

Who fills an ATM with cash?

Under free placement the ATM operator funds and loads the cash, usually through a scheduled technician run or an armoured cash-in-transit carrier, and the venue does nothing. Under a lease the arrangement is negotiated — many leases include managed cash, some leave loading to the business. If you own the machine outright, you fund the float yourself and either load it from your own takings or pay a carrier to do it. Whoever supplies the cash carries the working capital and the handling risk, which is why fully managed cash is the main practical advantage of placement.

How a run works

What a scheduled cash run looks like

Machines report note levels remotely, so replenishment is scheduled against actual dispense rates rather than guesswork. Sites with heavy weekend peaks are loaded ahead of the peak, not after it.

A load is a controlled process: the cassette is exchanged rather than topped up loose, the counts are reconciled electronically, and the settlement is matched against switch records. That is what keeps disputes rare and auditable.

If your venue prefers to recycle its own takings into the machine, that can be arranged — but the float, the counting time and the on-site cash risk then sit with you.

Questions people ask

Not under free placement. The operator funds and replenishes the float, so no venue capital is tied up in the machine.
