Short answer
ATM provider checklist for Australian businesses
Before choosing an ATM provider, prepare your business details (ABN, trading hours, floor space, power and lease permission), ask each provider the same questions about surcharge share, cash loading, contract term, fees and fault response, then compare offers on estimated net monthly income and exit terms rather than the headline word “free”.
Step 1
Documents and details to prepare
Providers assess a site on its details, so having them ready speeds up an accurate quote. None of these items commit you to anything.
- Business name, ABN and trading entity
- Site address and trading days and hours
- Estimated weekly customer numbers, or existing ATM transaction reports
- Floor space (about 60cm x 60cm for a free-standing unit) and a nearby power point
- Landlord or shopping-centre permission if you lease the premises
- Photos of the proposed location
- Current EFTPOS provider and any cash-out volumes
- Bank account details for surcharge-share payments (only once you sign)
Step 2
Questions to ask every provider
- Who owns the machine, and who loads the cash?
- What surcharge will customers pay, and what percentage or amount do I receive?
- How and how often are payments and transaction reports made?
- Are there any setup, monthly, connectivity or removal fees?
- How long is the contract, and what happens if volumes are low?
- How quickly are faults and cash-outs fixed, and who do I call?
- Who is responsible for insurance, theft and damage?
- What are the exit terms if I sell or move the business?
Step 3
How to compare offers
Put every offer in the same table. The best offer is the one with the highest realistic net income and fair exit terms — not necessarily the one with the highest quoted share.
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Your share of each surcharge | Drives monthly income; confirm it in writing |
| Cash-loading model | Provider-loaded means no float; self-loaded ties up your cash |
| Fees and minimums | Can reduce or remove your income at low volumes |
| Contract length and exit | Affects flexibility if the business changes |
| Service response | An empty or broken ATM earns nothing |
FAQs
Questions people ask
Providers generally deal with registered businesses, so have your ABN and trading details ready.
Yes. Asking two or three providers the same questions is the easiest way to see real differences.
Your share of the surcharge together with any fees and the exit terms, because together they decide what you actually earn.
